Tips Macbook Pro Touch bar - I've had a few days to start adjusting to the Touch Bar on my newly revamped MacBook Pro. While I'm not 100% selling the concept, I've seen the benefits and usage. Touch ID is long delayed. If you also have Apple's latest flagship product, I'll walk you through 20 tips and tricks to get you professional.
To get started, some basic terminology. Touch Bar mainly consists of several areas. On the far left, will be one of several options. This will be the Esc, X, or Done button, depending on the context. In the middle is the App Area. This is the space provided for any apps you currently use to display the controls. Then on the far right is the Control Strip. Four buttons that you can customize to perform certain functions throughout the system. This can also be enhanced by tapping the chevron key, and opening the Expanded Control Bar with more options.
Emulate Touch Bar on other Macs
We've covered some of the Touch Bar emulators in the past that let you try it by running it as an overlay window on your screen. It gives you a good idea of what the Touch Bar looks like, without actually lowering money on a new machine.
Quickly set the volume
Instead of tapping the volume icon in the Touch Bar, then moving the slider, you can actually press, and hold the icon, then start sliding. Sure, your finger is not parallel to the slider, but it's a quick and easy way to adjust the volume in one step.
Quickly adjust the brightness
Fun fact, the same goes for adjusting the volume quickly, also applies to adjust the brightness. Just tap, hold, and drag the brightness icon to increase or decrease the brightness of your screen.
Show function button
This is easy. Just hold the fn key, located on the lower left side of the keyboard, and the Touch Bar will be replaced with traditional function keys.
Show function buttons in specific apps
Maybe, in 1-2 specific applications, you always use the function keys. It is simple to always show the function button while you are in the application. In the system preferences, select the keyboard, then select the Shortcuts tab.
Select the function key from the list on the left, followed by the + button below. Select the app you want to allocate the function keys to, then press add. Now whenever you're in that app, you'll see a function button instead of the App Area, or Control Strip.
Show Expanded Control Strip at any time
If you are not a fan of the Touch Bar, it is not surprising if you choose to have the old options available at all times. Well, fortunately you can set the Expanded Control Strip to show all the old controls. Then you can set the Touch Bar to exclusively display the Expanded Control Strip.
Go back to the Keyboard menu in System Preferences, and where it allows you to change what is "Touch Bar show". Select Expanded Control Strip.
Hide Line Control
Instead of displaying the Expanded Controls Strip, you may want to see more App Regions instead. Effectively hide the Control Line. In the same location as the last tip, select App Area.
Press fn to show the Expanded Control Strip instead of the function key
If you're like me, you do not often use the function keys at all. So instead of displaying the function key when you press the fn key, I choose to have it show the Expanded Controls Strip.
Go back to the System Preferences keyboard menu, change "Press the Fn button to" show "Expand Control Strip"
Customize Control Strip
The Strip Control offers 4 locations for various buttons. You can change all of these with the button of your choice. For me, I've swapped them to use brightness, volume, show desktop, and screenshots.
In the System Preferences Keyboard panel, tap Customize Control Strip and your screen will be blurred except for a series of options that you can drag right to the control strip. It's neat enough so that it can pull the mouse from your screen, right into the Touch Bar!
Adjust the Extended Control Strip
With the same tone as editing Control Strips, you can also change the Extended Control Strip. Just follow the same steps as the last tip, but now tap on the chevron to the left of the Control Strip. Now you can also edit this option.
Customize App Area
Why stop with just a Control Strip? In many applications that support the Touch Bar, if you open the View> Customize Touch Bar ... you can now see the various options provided by the app to be placed in the Touch Bar.
When customizing the App Area, change to adjust the Control Strip
Just like how you can edit the App Area, if you want to jump from App Region to Control Line, just hit the Control Strip and you can make changes there. Tap in App Area to return.
Press to the left of the Esc key
Notice the Esc key is not exactly parallel to the keyboard side? Fret no, touch-typists. You can still press to the left of the Esc key, where it normally is, and will still recognize your input.
Interact with Touch Bar & Trackpad simultaneously
You can use the Touch Bar by itself. You can use the Trackpad by itself. Edge is prone, you can actually also use it simultaneously.
Scrubber media
When playing any media, the Touch Bar will allow you to play, pause, and rub through the media timeline. Whether your song or video is playing in iTunes, Quicktime, or Safari.
Even if you have two at once! So let's say you have a video playing in Quicktime, and a song in the background of iTunes. Instead of showing one or the other, the Touch Bar will display an app icon, and lets you control the media for each app separately.
Use the Touch Bar while in Windows Boot Camp
If you are still running Windows on Boot Camp, the Touch Bar will still come in handy. Not quite a lot If you run your Windows environment, the Touch Bar will display all the standard controls. So you will see things like volume, brightness, keyboard brightness, media control. And esc.
Quarter audio control
An old trick for the Mac is a quarter of the audio control steps. You do not have to take the full step if you do not want it. You can do this by holding Shift + Option on the keyboard, and toggling the audio up and down.
Well, it does not work that easily with the Touch Bar because you're more likely to just shift the controls. That goes up and down in full step.
However, if you open the Expanded Controls Strip, then hold Shift + Option when you press the up and down volume keys, you can adjust your hearing level in greater detail.
Wake up the Touch Bar from sleep
The Touch Bar will dim after 60 seconds, and fully sleep after 15 more. When your Touch Bar turns black on you, it's easy to turn it back on. You can (1) touch the trackpad, (2), press any key on the keyboard, or (3) touch the Touch Bar itself.
Use emoji while typing
One of the most enjoyable features of the Touch Bar is the ability to access emoji. Instead of opening the window, as you type, there is a persistent smiley face to the left of the Touch Bar. Tap this to see a long emoji stream, you can easily get into your text.
Complete automatic form
This is one of the favorite features and very useful for Touch Bar. Whenever you enter a form, similar to iOS, the Touch Bar will ask you to give full suggestions automatically. This is very useful when you fill out a form online.
Every time you click on a text box requesting an email, the Touch Bar will present you with up to 3 of your email addresses that you have saved to your contact card. The same is true when you click on a Name. Even passwords will have the suggested passwords generated from Safari.
So that's it. 20 tips and tricks make you become an expert at the new Apple Touch Bar OLED. We did not have time to close everything, for example using Touch ID with certain 3rd party applications.
